Kids Hope USA is a nonprofit organization that seeks to build life-changing relationships one at a time between students and mentors.
The Bridge partners with Eastview Elementary School through Kids Hope USA’s mentoring program. Volunteers go through an application and interview process, are background checked and trained to be mentors to at-risk children who have been recommended by their teachers. The mentor commitment is for the school year during which mentors meet with students once a week for lunch.

Through God and the guidance of Kids Hope, I was able to encourage, guide, teach, and provide hope. Together with my students, we were able to discover their talents and gifts and what brought them joy. During each session, we shared a meal, and talked about their favorite moments of the week prior. We wrote stories and poems, we learned about art and science and animals. We created memories that will live always. Each student, for 45 minutes, got my full attention. And each time, I had their full attention. What is the time commitment?
You will meet with your student for about one hour, every week, for one school year. The school calendar for mentoring is typically mid September – mid May, with time off over the holidays. Some programs also host an occasional party or outing for their Kids Hope USA students and mentors.
What will my student and I do during our time together?
You are there to build a relationship with the child, so you’ll be doing things like playing games, doing crafts, having conversations, and learning about the student’s interests. We encourage all mentors to read with their students and to make reading fun. In training you will learn about the Kids Hope USA Mentoring Hour, which you can use as a guide to organize the hour. Each child has different interests and needs, and you will begin to find a rhythm that works for you both. Kids Hope USA provides resources on getting to know each other, character development, and academics to enrich your time together.
What will my student be like?
The child has been referred by their teacher, counselor, or principal, believing some extra support and attention will benefit them. You may never know the reason for the referral. It could be that the child has been bullied; the family is going through a hard change, such as a death, divorce, or incarceration; or that their single parent is working two jobs and welcomes an additional caring adult in the child’s life. Regardless of the specific situation and the child’s personality, the general response of unconditional love and positivity will help them thrive.
